 Alexander
Brown grew up on Bayou Pierre in Louisiana. The swamp influenced his subjects
and eventually his medium as well. He began to sculpt in 1987 using cypress
reclaimed from the swamp. The sculptures are carved from a single block of
wood. He evaluates the massive piece of wood and decides where his sculpture rests
within.
Cypress has been a popular wood for his animal sculptures
because of its durability inside and out. His sculptures can be found gracing many
of the homes, pools and patios along the Gulf Coast. The art community of Bay Saint
Louis provides a natural environment for Alexander's sculptures to thrive. |
